Mrs. López’s Class Notes
Weeks of: 10/22/2018 - 10/26/2018, 10/29/2018-11/2/2018, and 11/5-11/9From Mrs. López
Hello!
Wow! How did we get to November already??? That went so fast! I’d like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that we have just 8 school days left until the end of the trimester. 8! Calm breaths! Calm breaths. I have been working with students to make sure they know where they stand currently in class and what they need to show me if they would like to move their grade up before the end of the trimester. My email is [email protected]. I’m sorry I got behind in my updates. We have been so busy that I forgot to hit send at the end of October and here were are already getting reading for our Thanksgiving Break. On Tuesday November 20th we will be having a feast. Your child signed up to bring a Middle Eastern Food item to school this coming Tuesday. We just finished studying this region in social studies and the students and I thought it would be fun to try some food they don’t usually eat. Please check what they signed up to bring and let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Brienne López

Writing: We did some great quick writes this week. Many students also continued to do some edits of their narrative stories.
Reading: We are learning about close reading and about how authors leave breadcrumbs in their stories to help us figure out what they are trying to say. We have learned the following signposts: Contrasts and Contradictions, Again and Again, Aha Moments, Memory Moments, Words of the Wiser and Tough Questions. When we see a signpost we stop and ask ourselves why the author might have included this information and what message they are trying to send. They are using these signposts to guide them during their nightly reading. (Standard CCSS RI/RL 7.2)
Social StudiesIslam: We wrapped up our Islam unit on Islam in the Middle Ages. We then moved into Medieval China!
Students looked at the geography of China in the Middle Ages and how the location of cities and the Silk Road was important. (Standard 7.2.2Students started to study the importance of site of encounter such as Quanzhou and explore the Afro Eurasia trade circles during the Middle Ages. (Standard 7.2.4 )
CelebrationsMultiple students did revisions to their essays and moved them to a 4
Students competed in a game as we did a simulation in social studies “The Race to Mecca” - Jerusalem won in the morning and Damascus won in the afternoon!

Mrs. López’s Class Notes
Weeks of: 09/10/2018 - 09/14/2018 and 9/17/2018-9/21/2018From Mrs. LópezHello parents and guardians! This is a newsletter to keep you up to date on what is going on in ELA and Social Studies for your 7th grade student. I am so enjoying getting to know your kids. We have already had some really great class discussions!
I have started entering grades into Aeries. My goal is to get them to proficiency (3) by the end of the trimester. I am specifically looking for TRENDS, not averages. This means I want to see how they are improving. If the student can show me that they can earn a 3 or 4 (exceeds the standard) in a particular skill by November, I won’t average it with the 1 from the beginning of the Trimester. Students will have a lot of opportunities to show me that they are growing and learning throughout the Trimester. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to email me!
Please discuss this with your children - we spent a lot of time discussing in class this week. They asked me to share the image below with their parents because it helped them understand and they felt much better. The below scale was created (the wording) by the students to help with their understanding of each level.
Below are some notes on what we have covered this week. Have a great weekend! Also, please let me know if you are able to chaperone the upcoming dance this Friday, September 28th, thanks!

- Writing: The last two weeks we started a Writer’s Notebook and began brainstorming ideas for realistic fiction stories to kick off our narrative writing unit.
- We learned how small moments in our lives can inspire longer stories.
- We learned how to generate story ideas and think about what kind of stories we want to see in the world. (Standard CCSS W 7.3)
- We learned about developing a character and scenes.
- Reading:
- We started reading Call of the Wild by Jack London. We will be reading this book for the next several weeks. It is a grade-level text, so we are working on our comprehension and vocabulary with this book. It is a difficult read therefore we will be reading in class so that we can discuss. (Standard CCSS RL 7.10)
- Additionally students are to be reading for two hours a week at home. They have a reading log to track their reading time and one reading comprehension question to answer each week regarding their reading. They do their reading however they want as long as they complete two hours - this can be done all at once or in small chunks. (RL.7.10 - Reading Grade Level Text)
- Quick Write: We are working on stamina in our writing as well as creativity. Students have to write for five minutes. (Standard CCSS W 7.10)
- Big Ideas: We finished talking about the 6 big ideas in Social Studies. Ask your student for an example of each!
- Economy, Geography, Leadership, Social Class, Religion, and Achievements
- Rome: We started our unit on Rome this week!
- We explored the physical geography of the Roman Empire and why specific features like rivers and mountains could help make a society powerful. (Standard 7.1.2)
- We watched a video about what life was like for Roman teenagers in the year 79 AD. Ask your student at what age Roman youth were considered “adults!” (Standard 7.1.1)
- We explored contributions to modern society from the Roman Empire such as aqueducts, road, concrete, language, math and more!
- We looked at the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
